Inspired by traditions of craft and storytelling, Kuh and Cusack present interpretations of how the human form has been portrayed and articulated over time. By approaching the historicity of this subject matter through a contemporary lens, Embodied Era addresses how the past can serve as a framework for us to approach who we are today.
Kuh’s work featured in this exhibition considers the human form and how the body shapes clay.
The dynamic qualities captured in each vessel are expressions of her engagement with the medium itself. Kuh’s process embodies a respect for this material’s history and for its ongoing and ever evolving potential.
Peter Cusack’s practice is rooted in his drawings of lived experiences, cultural observations, and early 19th Century French art.
In the face of a society that can feel chaotic, 19th Century art offers Cusack a solace: a reverence for humanity and for how we fit into nature. It is this dichotomy, between chaos and order, that informs Cusack’s paintings.
Many of the figures Cusack depicts are representations of loved ones passed. Their presence in his paintings are both palpable and abstract, much like memories. Through painting, Cusack is at once externalizing his own memory, while simultaneously examining our collective history and relationship to the human form through art.
