Jewelry

How should I care for/clean my jewelry?

Gold Filled Jewelry: gold filled metal is comprised a layer of solid gold — generally at least 5% of the piece’s weight — that is mechanically bonded to a strong, mixed-metal base. It is less prone to chipping, fading, and tarnishing than gold-plated jewelry, and can last a lifetime with proper care.

-Avoid wearing jewelry in chemical-rich environments, especially hot tubs and pools.

-Keep jewelry away from perfumes, hairsprays, scented lotions, and sunscreen.

-Remove jewelry when exercising, as chemicals released by sweat may react with the alloy.

-If jewelry become tarnished, wipe down with a jewelry cloth and/or gently scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water.

14k Gold Jewelry: 14k gold is one of the most durable alloys and is not prone to tarnishing. If the metal appears dull, wipe down with a jewelry cloth and/or gently scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water.

Stones: All stones and pearls are organic material that should be treated with care. Avoid any contact with hard surfaces and remove stone jewelry while exercising as a best practice. We use drilled beads for many of our designs - should the drill hole collect debris over time, soak in hot water and soap to loosen, then use a toothbrush to clean throughout the hole.

Opals: opals are extremely soft and porous stones, which means that they absorb moisture. Be careful not to wear opals in any water, during exercise or excessive sweat, or in extremely humid climates as these conditions can result in discoloration or cracking.

Pearls: to maintain your pearl’s natural lustre, avoid chemicals and salt water with wear as they will dull the pearl’s nacre (outermost layers).

Are your earrings sold in pairs?

All Mary MacGill earrings are sold in pairs unless clearly stated in the product description.

Can I purchase extra earring backs?

Yes, you can purchase extra earring backs (metal or silicone) for $5 plus shipping. Please email us with inquiries.

Can you send me photos of available pieces before I make a purchase?

Due to the small size of our team, we’re not able to send photos to customers before purchase or shipment. All of our stones are unique and may differ slightly from that pictured, but are carefully chosen and will be similar. Please see the Returns and Exchanges section to check if your desired item is eligible for a return or exchange before placing your order.

Engagement

+

What does working together on a custom project look like?

It begins with scheduling a virtual or in-person appointment in our Germantown, NY showroom. Completing the questionnaire ahead of time helps us prepare and make the most of our meeting.

During your appointment, we’ll review your responses, discuss timeline, preferences, and explore what working together could look like. If you’re visiting in person, let us know if there are specific rings you'd like to try—we’ll have them ready. In-person meetings often help clarify direction more quickly (and sometimes, couples even leave with a ring in hand!). It's a chance to try on styles, explore settings, ask questions, and start to clarify your vision. We’ll share both ready-made rings and loose (unset) stones, and we recommend taking photos and videos to reflect on afterward.

Following your meeting, we’ll send a proposal outlining the pieces that resonated most—this includes pricing, photos, and stone information. For virtual meetings, proposals are typically shared within 7–10 days (unless we need to source a specific stone).

From there, we’ll refine the design together until you’ve landed on your final choice. Once you’ve selected your ring or stone, a 50% deposit initiates production. Rings built around loose stones typically take 4 to 5 weeks, while ready-made rings requiring only resizing take about 3 to 4 weeks. If you have a specific date in mind, let us know during your consultation—we’ll do our best to accomodate.

Once your ring is complete, we’ll send your final invoice and coordinate shipping or pickup. All engagement rings come with one of our handcrafted wooden ring boxes, relevant diamond documentation, and a complimentary jewelry appraisal available upon request.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes, Mary MacGill offers a one year warranty on our engagement rings which will cover the cost of any damages that are a result of manufacturing. If pieces are noticeably bent, show improper care, or are damaged in any other manner that is not a result of faulty ring production, repairs will be performed at cost. Outside of our warranty, we offer repairs for a fee. Our warranty covers tightening of our setting, but it does not cover loss of stone. If your stone falls out and is lost, process a claim with your jewelry insurance provider with your appraisal to arrange a replacement. We are happy to provide any necessary information required by your provider.

What sort of repairs are commonly needed?

Because engagement rings are worn daily, it’s not uncommon for stones to loosen over time—and it’s no cause for alarm. To check, hold the ring up to your ear and gently wiggle the stone with your finger. If you hear a rattle, it’s loose. In that case, stop wearing the ring and reach out to us—or another trusted jeweler—for tightening. We’re happy to provide this service for a fee if the ring is outside warranty.

You may also need your ring resized over time, especially after life or body changes (pregnancy being the most common). Resizing costs $50 and takes approximately 3–4 weeks.

Do you offer insurance?

No, we don’t offer insurance, but we highly recommend it. You can either extend your homeowner’s policy to include jewelry coverage or purchase a standalone policy through providers like Jewelers Mutual or Lavalier , which cover theft, accidental damage, and loss.

If you haven’t received your complimentary appraisal, contact Marion and she’ll be happy to provide one.

How should I care for my Mary MacGill engagement ring?

Our rings are thoughtfully crafted for everyday wear, but because our bands and settings are on the thinner side, they do require proper care to avoid bending or misshaping. To ensure your ring lasts a lifetime, we recommend removing it for high-impact activities like rock climbing, surfing, weightlifting, or gardening—especially if you’re working with stone or gravel. Repeated impact can loosen a stone over time, though it should only fall out in the case of serious trauma.

We also suggest removing your ring in chemical-rich environments such as hot tubs, hot springs, or when cleaning with bleach and other harsh products. For more conservative care, consider taking your ring off while showering, sleeping, applying makeup or perfume, and washing dishes, as buildup can dull the stone and setting over time.

14k yellow gold won’t tarnish, but its surface can lose luster with daily wear. To restore shine, clean your ring every few months using gentle soap and a soft toothbrush—or an ultrasonic cleaner (this is the one we use in our studio).

How durable is the stone or diamond in my engagement ring?

Understanding the hardness of your engagement ring’s gemstone can help you care for it properly. Gemstones are rated on the Mohs scale of hardness, which ranks scratch resistance from 1 to 10. While the scale isn’t linear—meaning a diamond (10) is significantly harder than a sapphire (9)—it’s a helpful guide. That said, durability isn’t determined by hardness alone; resistance to wear, heat, chemicals, light, and humidity also plays an important role in how a stone holds up over time.

Clear diamonds, ranked at 10, are among the hardest materials on Earth. Their strength makes them ideal for everyday wear, though they can scratch softer stones in nearby jewelry.

Mineral diamonds also rate a 10 in hardness, but their durability can vary depending on internal inclusions. Stones with large or edge-reaching inclusions are more prone to chipping if significantly impacted.

Sapphires, rated a 9, are excellent for daily wear with proper care. They're highly durable and rarely present issues for long-term wearers.

Tourmalines, rated between 7 and 7.5, are softer by comparison but still suitable for everyday wear when treated with care.

What are mineral diamonds?

Mineral diamonds have always existed, but for much of modern jewelry history, they were overlooked. Because the industry long valued only clear, colorless, industrial-grade stones, mineral diamonds were considered valueless—often ground down for drill bits or machinery.

In recent decades, however, their unique beauty has sparked growing interest. Each mineral diamond is entirely one-of-a-kind, offering a grounded, character-rich alternative to the traditional clear diamond.

Their color comes from the minerals present in the Earth’s crust at the time of formation. Nitrogen creates warm yellow tones, Boron produces blues and greys, and natural radiation lends some stones a green hue. These “inclusions” are not flaws, but markers of the diamond’s ancient and natural origins.

Mineral diamonds are always untreated, unheated, and cannot be replicated in a lab—each one a singular expression of the Earth’s slow alchemy.

What is your “floating” setting?

Customers can think of Mary’s signature floating setting as a thoughtful blend of prong and bezel styles. While both are classic, Mary found prongs could catch on sweaters and hair, while bezels often felt too gold-heavy.

The floating setting is a thin yet sturdy hand-built frame of 14k yellow gold that gently wraps the stone, leaving the sides open. This allows maximum light to enter and reflect through the stone, enhancing its natural brilliance. All floating rings feature a 1.6mm band, designed for everyday wear.

Do you work with any other settings or metals?

We like to work within the design language of our floating setting, but we are open to setting customer’s stones in a prong set if they wish. We also can make your piece in platinum, rose gold, and 18k gold. Please email Marion for quotes.

I don’t know my, or my partner’s ring size. How should I find that out?

The easiest and most reliable way to find out a ring size is to stop by a local jewelry store—they’ll usually size you quickly and for free.

If you're trying to keep the process a surprise and don’t know your partner’s size, start by asking a parent or trusted friend (they might just know!). If not, see if your partner wears a ring on their ring finger and ever takes it off—if so, you can discreetly bring it in to be sized. Keep in mind: if the ring is worn on the right hand, it’s typically about half a size larger than the left ring finger.

And if you're truly unsure, size 6 is the most common women’s ring size. If it’s not quite right, don’t worry—we’re happy to resize it later. :)

How do you ship your engagement rings?

We ship all our engagement rings via FedEx Express, and require all packages to be signed for by an adult. If working together on a ring project, we’ll let you know when the ring is complete and ready to be shipped, and ship based on the date that’s best for you to receive the package. We’ve shipped engagement rings to offices, best friend’s houses, mother’s homes – it’s up to you! We can also use an alias in the return address if your partner is familiar with our brand.

Does my engagement ring come with a ring box?

Yes, all our engagement rings come in one of our branded wooden ring boxes, available in either black walnut or cherry.

I have a family diamond or ring that I’d like to work with for my engagement ring. Does Mary MacGill do that?

Yes, we offer resetting services—exclusively into our signature floating setting. The cost to unset and reset a stone is $2,000, with a turnaround time of 3–4 weeks. Your original setting will be returned to you with the finished piece, though we’re unable to reuse or melt it down.

Before we begin, we’ll ask you to sign a resetting agreement, which outlines the risks involved. Occasionally, damage to a stone may be revealed during resetting—damage that was previously hidden or held together by the original setting. There is also a small risk of chipping during our production process, particularly with pre-owned stones. The more a stone is worked with, the more vulnerable it becomes.

By signing the agreement, you acknowledge and accept this risk, and understand that we are not liable for any damage that may occur during resetting. We strongly recommend having your stone appraised and insured before sending it to us.

I love a one-of-a-kind ring but it’s sold out. Will it be restocked?

Unfortunately, no. Most of our engagement rings feature one-of-a-kind stones that can’t be replicated. The exception is a few styles—like our lab-grown emerald-cut and egg-shaped diamond floating rings—which can be made again.

If you had your eye on a sold-out piece, feel free to reach out. We have a large collection of unset stones and diamonds and may have something similar available for a custom project.

Can I return my Mary MacGill engagement ring?

Ready-made rings that haven’t been resized are eligible for return under our standard return policy. Custom rings, or any ring that has been resized, are final sale and not eligible for return.

Where do you source your diamonds? How do I know that my diamond is “conflict free”?

Mary hand-selects all of our diamonds and engagement stones at the Tucson Gem Show each year—a tradition she’s kept for nearly a decade. We source engagement stones exclusively from vendors at the AGTA show, which upholds one of the strictest codes of ethics in the jewelry industry. AGTA members must adhere to fair business practices, responsible sourcing standards, and regulations that prohibit child labor and support environmentally and socially responsible mining.

We fully support AGTA’s ethical priorities and feel confident in the integrity of the stones we choose. It’s worth noting that lab-grown diamonds are conflict-free by default, making them an attractive candidate for customers especially concerned with a diamond’s origin story.

What is a ‘lab grown’ diamond? Why do you offer both lab grown and mined diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are created by replicating the natural diamond formation process in a controlled environment. Using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) methods, a small diamond seed is placed under conditions that allow carbon atoms to build around it—forming a diamond over several weeks. Once grown, the rough diamond is cut and polished just like a natural stone.

I lost an earring that was part of a pair. Can I purchase a single earring?

Generally, yes! It depends on our stone inventory, so email us with the product details and we’ll let you know if it’s possible. For some styles, we may request that you mail your single earring to our studio so we can most accurately match it. Earring matches cost half the price of the pair, and customers are responsible for all shipping costs.

My jewelry item broke/was damaged. How much do repairs cost?

Repair costs are determined on a case-by-case basis, and will depend on the nature of the repair, the kind of metal, and when the piece was purchased. For a quote or further information, please contact us detailing the repair needed.

How long do repairs take?

Repair timelines depend on the nature of the work. Gold-filled repairs typically take 2–3 weeks, and 14k gold repairs take 4–6 weeks when dropped off at our Germantown, NY location. If your repair is more extensive than expected or the timeline shifts, we’ll let you know right away.
